Not: Lady Chatterley’s Lover – Happy Idiot Productions Autumn Tour 2018

We are looking for a company stage manager for Autumn 2018 (with a view to doing a second run in Spring 2019) of Happy Idiot’s production of ‘Not: Lady Chatterley’s Lover’.

It is an exciting time to come on board with this growing company and our first major tour. We are touring to 15 small to mid-scale venues for one night across the UK with spaces ranging from black box studios to community theatres. At each venue we would expect the ideal candidate to be welcoming and professional to all venues as you will be representing the company at performances, meeting and liaising with venue owners and hosts around the country.

Availability: 11th October until 18th November 2018 (with some production meetings prior to the start of the tour).

Job Description:

The nature of our tours, with the challenges of multiple different venues, makes the bility to stay calm under pressure and multi-task in an extremely varied role essential. This role will include working during rehearsals at Red Rose Chain in Ipswich for one week then touring across the UK for three weeks which currently includes 15 venues, 17 shows. This role includes (but is not limited to the below):

  • Leading on get in and get outs, ensuring everything is running to time. (Each venue will have their own in-house technician to assist. Other members of the company will also help as stage crew).
  • Driving a multi-seater van across the UK (split with a member of the company)
  • Building the book during rehearsals 
  • Running the tech during the show
  • Ensuring the health and safety is met, including risk assessments 
  • Setting and maintaining all props and costumes
  • Creating technical riders for each venue
  • Communicating with each venues technical team to ensure the right equipment is available prior to the shows get-in
  • Running and setting up creative captioning for the show
  • Being the first point of call for venues and any arising issues on show days
  • Assisting the producer and general manager in running the tour, supporting the director during rehearsals.

Person Specification (Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience):

  • Full UK driving license, 25+ years old and comfortable driving a 6-seat minibus / van
  • Good communicator and people management skills, able to project confidence, tact and diplomacy
  • Proficient knowledge of QLab and Mac-based software
  • Confident to use and set up several different sound and lighting boards
  • Comfortable working in several different venues and adjusting to their specifications
  • Effective team support and coordination skills
  • Flexibility to work varied hours
  • The ability to work consistently under pressure and remain calm
  • Ability to provide and use own laptop running QLab or similar desirable
  • Specific interest and experience in lighting desirable

Please be aware this role includes carrying and lifting some heavy items


£471* per week for 4 weeks (1 week rehearsal plus 3 weeks touring)

Accommodation will be provided by the company when required throughout the tour. Meals or meal subsidy will be provided during the tour days.

Relocation cost will be paid for 1 technical week in Ipswich (if required).

*This is inclusive of holiday pay, please note as a freelance position the successful candidate will be responsible for their own tax with the HMRC.
